I took the opportunity to get outside and do some outdoor sketching. The weather recently was very favourable, sunny and not too windy. I set up my paints on a picnic bench and spent some time immersed in the scene enjoying the atmosphere.

September holiday in Canada
I was inspired to do a sketch of a Canadian Goose at the start of a walk around Fairy Lake. My sketchbook is a nice compact square pad which I have always gravitated towards. At school it was my favourite shape to doodle in. I had with me my travel watercolour paints and box of neocolor II crayons which are water-soluble. I like them as they can give texture to the painting without being too messy to work with.

The Pittenweem Arts Festival 2018 starts on Saturday 4th August and runs until Sunday 12th August. My web site has a page showing some of the paintings I will be exhibiting. See my Pittenweem Arts Festival 2018 page.

This Anemone plant was a present form a friend. I took it outside to do a painting in the sunlight. I acquired a photo slide projector stand with a plan to use it for still life compositions. It came from a charity shop and was put it to use the same day! I have found it has become very useful when working in the studio. It folds flat for storage which is brilliant.

It was quite stormy weather for Easter. I did manage to get outside in front of the studio to do some sketching of the waves coming into the shore. It was exhilarating to watch and great to be close to the waves. I had prepared a box of Unison Pastels which were from a new large 72 pastel landscape box. I needed to break them in half as they are much better to use this way. This gives me two smaller boxes, one for the studio and the other for working outside, with all of the 72 pastels in them. See above.
Thanks to everyone who made it along for the Open Studio event, especially those that had to dodge the waves!

I was able to get out and about to do some sketching on the weekend. Weather was windy as often it is at Elie. I think it makes me work quicker about (15 mins) and adds to the atmosphere to the sketch. Over the weekend I managed to get quite a number of sketches done.

There is a group of artists in Pittenweem getting together once a month for life drawing practice. It is good to have this challenge especially at the beginning of a new year. working alongside other artists is always inspirational and fun.

Happy Christmas 2017
This small painting was inspired by the winter light in the harbour at Pittenweem. The red boat has been in the harbour for a while and I think it makes for a great focal point.
Christmas wishes to you and your family.
