I have started back at my evening life drawing class at Dundee College. We had just one pose for the evening, which meant a detailed study was possible.

September is a favourite month off mine. I particularly love the sunsets you see in this season. I saw the sun setting last night and just had to paint it.

Today the weather was really wet so I used photo reference to do this cheery sunflower.

Before going to work in the studio I did a warm up sketch of furniture in the living room. The sketch was done with a chunky permanent ink pen and pencil for additional shading. The ink doesn’t allow for errors, sometimes that is the fun of using it.

I was catching up with gardening today. I decided to stop and get my pastels out as the bee’s on the lavender were quite captivating. They really are a fast moving subject but I liked the challenge.

I had fun sketching these moving subjects. I saw the parents swim ashore with 8 cygnets following. They starting preening themselves in the sun which allowed me time to draw them quickly.

I took this photo of one of the blackbirds that I have been feeding. If you look closer the mother bird has a broken claw. She has managed to rear a healthy chick, and seems to manage with her injury. Isn’t the chick so cute.

Lovely sunny morning today. I started the day with breakfast outside. While I was eating I noticed how interesting the light looked shining on the pots on the steps that lead up into the garden. Once I had finished breakfast I started my study.

I am just in from the garden having done this painting for the blog. I had to wait until it cooled down as we are having a mini heat wave just now. The sunlight was shining on the roses and made them glow. When I brought the painting in I noticed the greenfly were on my painted flowers!

This is a preparatory sketch for a studio painting. I am using a pink pastel ground and will introduce the pastel colours next. I could not resist the smiling face.
