Today I did this study in oil pastel something I am enjoying more and more. I enjoyed layering in the colours for the sky and pushing in the lights to illuminate the picture.

Autumn is my favourite season of the year. I love the changing colours of the leaves on the trees before they fall. This painting was inspired by a walk beside the River Tay in Dunkeld. In a previous post I did a tiny study which lead to me to do a larger painting.

I have been preparing for a workshop I am doing this week for the Perthshire Art Association. I though a seascape would suit using acrylics as an underpainting and finishing with soft pastels.

My reference for this study painting was from a photo I took in Canada. The way the sunlight was catching these flowers really caught my attention.

This is a small oil pastel painting I did of Monet’s ‘Vase of Flowers’. I am in awe of the beautiful colours he used to paint this piece. I always learn so much from these studies and hopefully some of that spills into my new work.

This is a page from my sketch book showing some of my thumbnail sketches. The one on the top right is my small study for the previous post of “Snow Scene at Pittenweem”. I love doing these thumbnails and they give me energy to get on with my next painting.

Today I finished this painting of snow covering the beach on West Shore Pittenweem. My inspiration was from a visit last year on Boxing day. The path along West Shore was very icy. I loved the golden light across the water with snow covered foreground.

This was my first drawing at the start of a new term of Life Drawing Class in Dundee. I am enjoying the challenge that this kind of drawing from life demands.

I am back home in bonny Scotland and the rain here has inspired this pastel painting. People out shopping in the rain with their colourful umbrella’s make for an interesting composition.

I liked the colours of the chairs on the deck and decided to take some down to the beach to include in a painting. It was a beautifully sunny day but quite windy, the chairs kept falling over! The contrast of the lake colours against the colours on the chairs appealed to me.
