Yesterday I did this study painting of a couple paddling on St Andrews beach. Something I love to do however I will need to wait a while as temperatures just now freezing!

My 2009 calendar had a different Monet painting each month. I so enjoyed looking at these pictures throughout the year. The freshness and quality of light in his work is extraordinary. I enjoyed doing these little studies and learning more about his work.

I did this quick sketch on the train back from Edinburgh. If you make a drawing you always remember so much more than if you had photographed the subject. I used a permanent ink pen and 3 neutral coloured brush pens.

When looking at a piece of watercolour paper which had washes of watercolour and acrylic ink on it. I got inspiration to do this painting. Some of the washes show through on the final painting. I used goauche to bring out the figure and followed this with conte crayons and finally some soft pastel.

I have recently finished this portrait as a commission. It is mostly conte with just a touch of soft pastels in the final strokes.

Just back from a tour of some of the Hebridean islands. A great trip which has given me lots of inspiration. The recent life drawing class lesson was using charcoal to get an idea of the shapes then coming in with conte to define the drawing. I chose to use this technique to do a landscape study from the ferry ride looking to the Uist hills.

This is a warm up exercise in preparation for a larger studio painting. The sketch only took me minutes to do however this study helped me to plan out colour and composition.

This Charcoal sketch is a study for a studio painting.

Looking through old photographs I have found some good subjects to work on. I have lots more in a box ready to be sketched into new ideas for paintings.

While listening to a concert on Saturday night I felt compelled to sketch at the same time. I didn’t have any art paper, however the programme and a borrowed pen came to my rescue. Lovely to sketch to the rhythm of the music.
