I did this oil pastel sketch on the first day of the life drawing workshop. Each pose by the model was for 5 mins. The model would go into another pose for the next 5 mins and so on until she had done six different poses. I started in the centre of my paper with my lightest yellow oil pastel. The drawings were layered on top of previous sketches using stronger coloured oil pastels as I progressed. This was a real fun exercise.

This sketch was done in 40minutes at the workshop on day one. I used charcoal, pastel and conte.

This week I attended a two day Life Drawing Workshop at Dundee College. It was excellent and a great opportunity to create lively interesting sketches. This sketch incorporated two models with a background setup of bikes and brightly coloured flags. There were a total of four models. The models moved around the games hall to allow artists to have a change of model for each drawing.

This study was done on a very rough ground which I prepared myself. Once my surface was prepared I was inspired by the way the colours looked on the surface, and I was lead to paint something from my imagination.

This was a painting I finished the other day. I do so love sand dunes and that glimpse of the sea.

This is a more moody subject matter. Every so often I enjoy the challenge of painting a dramatic sky. In Fife we see some really amazing panorama’s of landscape and clouds.

The sea holds so much fascination for me. It is always changing and constantly moving. This study was done on Art Spectrum Colourfix Paper. I prepared a thin wash in gouache to give me a base colour to work on. Once this was dry I got busy with the pastels.

Yesterday I did this study painting of a couple paddling on St Andrews beach. Something I love to do however I will need to wait a while as temperatures just now freezing!

My 2009 calendar had a different Monet painting each month. I so enjoyed looking at these pictures throughout the year. The freshness and quality of light in his work is extraordinary. I enjoyed doing these little studies and learning more about his work.
