This is a little different as I started the painting with torn pieces of card, paper and thread etc. I then did washes of acrylic paint to tone and enhance the texture on the surface. I enjoyed starting in this loose manner.

This is the image I painted for my 2010 Christmas card. While we were out walking we stumbled upon these delightful deer crossing the track. They stopped to check us out before heading back into the shelter of the forest. I thought I would post it now for the Winter Solstice.

Once my underpainting had dried I started laying in some oil pastel colours. They are nice to use for this subject. My underpainting I felt had captured the mood of the subject. I was now just reinforcing this with colour.

This is the first stage for a study painting. I used a warm brown acrylic ink and a cool light grey for a contrast. This was done on a pastel support that can take watermedia.

I enjoyed using a different approach to applying oil pastels. I started doing a loose painting of the little girl in acrylic on canvas. I finished off the painting using oil pastels on top of the acrylic paint allowing some of the undercoat to show through. This was fun to do.

I did this study of Crail Harbour as a mixed media. I started with inks then soft pastel on top.

This was my drawing from last nights life drawing class. I used vandyke ink to block in the major shapes, then once that had dried I did my drawing over the ink. I used charcoal initially then conte to get a nice strong dark. I finished by putting some pastel colour to indicate the blanket she was lying on.

Last week I did a large collage life drawing 21 inches by 30 inches. This was done over two weeks with 2 hour sessions. I started by using gesso on the paper surface. Once dry I added strips of glossy magazines approx the shape of the figure. Then more gesso and acrylic paint. Some of the background paper shows through. Quite messy however good fun. A great way to achieve some interesting effects.

After doing the warm up exercise at life drawing class we got down to a few 40min exercises. This contour drawing was done with conte and then washes were applied using an opaque paint. The skin tone was done in small brush strokes in different directions. Several colours were used in layers. First orange then blue then a warm red. I didn’t quite get this finished.

This painting is mainly done in Gouache with some pastel on top. I love the glimpses of crofts as you travelled on the roads in Barra.
