Study for Chef, Pastel

gina_wright_study_for_chef_pastel.jpg

This is my preparation for a new painting that I have been working on. The charcoal sketch was to get a feel for the composition. I then did a small colour study with blocks of colour and kept a note of those used as small swatches. At this point I get quite excited about a painting as I can see how I want to complete the work.

These two pictures are from my Thursday evening life drawing class. The exercise was using powdered charcoal and slightly toned paper and no tools except one finger! This was an interesting (ever so messy) study of tones, light against dark.

October Sky, Pastel

Just finished painting in the studio when I noticed how beautiful the sky was looking. I grabbed some blue Canson paper and a box of pastels so as I could paint the view. I used charcoal for the darks to get this very quick 15 min sketch done. It was amazing how fleeting the sky was. When I had finished it had completely changed and there was very little pinky orange to the sky.

This is a page from my sketch book showing studies for some seascape compositions I am considering. More inspiration from our trip to the Outer Hebrides!

North Beach, Barra, Pastel

I was asked to do a demonstration at Largo Bay Arts Society. Here is the painting that I did last night, not quite completed. The orange ground is showing through in the foreground rocks.

I did this tonal study for a new painting I have in mind. I sketched the scene when we were on Barra so I could refer to it in the studio.

Lessons From Life Drawing

Just back from a tour of some of the Hebridean islands. A great trip which has given me lots of inspiration. The recent life drawing class lesson was using charcoal to get an idea of the shapes then coming in with conte to define the drawing. I chose to use this technique to do a landscape study from the ferry ride looking to the Uist hills.

Contented Cat, Charcoal and Conte

This is a preparatory sketch for a studio painting. I am using a pink pastel ground and will introduce the pastel colours next. I could not resist the smiling face.

Girl With Pigtails, Charcoal Sketch

This Charcoal sketch is a study for a studio painting.

Harold And Rose, Conte

I found these two wooden rabbits while out shopping and thought I might like to do a drawing of them. I used three different colours of conte crayons in this sketch and charcoal.
