This is a preparatory sketch for a studio painting. I am using a pink pastel ground and will introduce the pastel colours next. I could not resist the smiling face.

This is a warm up exercise in preparation for a larger studio painting. The sketch only took me minutes to do however this study helped me to plan out colour and composition.

This painting was done outside in the sun. The reason for the cup and saucer being a favourite is that it has a pattern of a sleeping lizard on the saucer. Anyone drinking coffee from it gets a surprise.

Today we were at the Tayside Classic Car Club show at Errol. A beautiful day with some threatening clouds. This orange VW campervan caught my eye and I just had to sketch and paint it. These vehicles always put a smile on my face as they are so cute and practical.

I was looking out the window at the flowers in the garden and noticed how nice they were looking. I decided to get out my watercolours and do a painting. A family of Great Tits were being fed by the parents just in the tree behind me. I had to turn to watch them.

Today I was at Balmerino for an art lunch with creative friends. Tide was out so I had the opportunity to set up on the shore. Using a bit of artistic licence for the waves!! This painting I did just with a palette knife. I forgot to take my mixing palette so had to work directly from my colours.

Today I was out collecting paintings after an exhibition and went on to Pittenweem to do some outdoor painting. This was a study I did down by the harbour. The boat you can see had Pittenweem written on the side. Pittenweem is always an interesting place to visit and paint.

On Sunday we went to Fowlsheugh Nature Reserve and saw the most amazing views. The colour of the water was jewel like. I did a quick sketch looking down to the sea. There was lots of sea birds which we got quite close to.

At the weekend we went on a trip in our campervan to Stonehaven. On the morning we were leaving I set up my materials and worked a very quick sketch of these boats in the quiet harbour. With my neocolours set out beside me I attracted the interest of a male mallard duck. He was sure the wax crayons were some kind of food. He came really close just to investigate. That is the fun of painting outside there is usually something interesting happening that makes it very memorable.
